NYS DEC registered electronic waste recycling facilities: the subset near New York City
New York State requires electronic waste recycling facilities to register with the Department of Environmental Conservation. A registration is a state listing, not a certification. This page explains the difference, links the official list and its open-data copy, and shows the 18 registered facilities in Kings, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland counties as we read them on 2026-09-21, with county, street address and registration number. It is not the statewide list. RemoteHands.nyc is not a recycler and is not registered with DEC; we are the hands from the rack to the dock.

What a DEC registration is, and is not
Under New York's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, a facility that recycles electronic waste in the state has to register with the Department of Environmental Conservation. DEC publishes the registered facilities by county, with a street address and a registration number for each. That is what this page lists: a state registration under the state's electronic waste law.
It is not a certification. Nobody audits a registered facility against a standard in order to register it. R2 (housed by SERI) and e-Stewards (run by the Basel Action Network) are certifications, checked by independent auditors, and they cover things a registration does not, such as data security and downstream tracking. A facility can hold a DEC registration and no certification, a certification and no registration, or both. The table shows both columns as the registries report them, so you can see which is which.
Where the official list lives: DEC, Registered Electronic Waste Recycling Facilities (the authority) and, as open data, the Electronic Waste Recycling Facilities List on data.ny.gov, published by DEC. The two can differ in timing; when they do, the DEC page wins.

This is the part of the DEC list we track for hand-offs from New York City and Long Island data centers, read on 2026-09-21 from the DEC page dated 07/23/2026. On that date the DEC list showed no registered facility for New York, Queens or Bronx, which is why none appears here for Manhattan, Queens or the Bronx. It is a subset. Facilities in the rest of New York State are on the official list linked above. County, street address and registration number are as the DEC list gives them; where DEC uses a different name for the facility, that name is shown under ours. Where a facility also has an R2 or e-Stewards record, that column shows the status that registry gave when we last read it (2026-09-20); a lapsed R2 status does not remove a facility from the DEC list.

Questions about DEC registration

Is a NYS DEC registration a certification?
No. It is a registration with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation under the state's Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, which requires electronic waste recycling facilities to register with DEC. The DEC list is the state saying a facility is registered to handle electronic waste, not an independent auditor saying it meets a standard. R2 and e-Stewards are certifications: an outside auditor checks the facility against a published standard. Some facilities on this page hold both a DEC registration and an R2 certificate (8 do as of 2026-09-20); the columns show which.

Does a DEC registration mean the facility can destroy my data?
Not by itself. The registration is about handling electronic waste. Data destruction is a service the vendor may or may not offer, and the proof of it is the vendor's certificate of data destruction, ideally one per device following NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2. Ask the vendor what it offers, check any R2 or e-Stewards claim on the registry, and read what a certificate of data destruction should contain before you ship drives.

Is this the whole New York State list?
No. This page shows the 18 registered facilities in Kings, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester and Rockland counties, as read from the DEC list on 2026-09-21. It is the subset that is practical for a hand-off from a New York City or Long Island data center. The full statewide list is on DEC's registered facilities page and as the Electronic Waste Recycling Facilities List dataset on data.ny.gov; the dataset can lag the web page, and the web page is the authority.

Is RemoteHands.nyc registered with DEC?
No. RemoteHands.nyc is not a certified recycler and is not registered with any state as one.
